The author uses a simple narrative style to tell a story with complex layers from the life of an elderly optician whose old world ways no more attract customers, the tense relation between him and his son who has a different attitude to life and different ideas on running the business and the tragedy in the life of a young woman. Through a few carefully chosen sentences the author has been able to give life even to the sales girl. His use of the sound of breaking of glasses as a metaphor of fortune as well as misfortune in the life of an optician is appropriate.
A very good story.
