I think we should approach mythological characters and tales with that perspective. The author simply lacks the understanding.
Now about the key point raised. It is a logical indeed. However, there is another logic which we may apply to reclaim the myth. Why don't we assume probably even the land of kerala too was sunk to sea with maveli? Vamana anyway, is capable of taking all lands with one step and he do that as well. So, Vamana sink Kerala to sea along with Maveli and Parasurama retook it....
