A very good social commentary

A very good attempt to make a social commentary on the mindset of the oppressed, who in spite of being on the receiving end, remain servile and sing paeans on the oppressor.

By the way, the comment on the author�s profession bodes a parochial mindset. Every profession carries dignity and deserves respect as long as it serves the society. The previous generation of readers did not take into consideration the educational background of Kesavdev who was a school drop out or the profession of Parappurathu who was a soldier while appreciating their literary works.

The author introduces the story as the reminiscences of a long journey to home by an expatriate , the high point of which was a casual meeting between the protagonist and a childhood friend. Unfortunately, the narrative which starts from the preparations of the journey and ends with his return, almost reads like an essay on the trip to home, rather than a story. A late introduction of the child hood friend Hafza adds to this perception.

Yet, there are occasional streaks of a talented writer.

Sreekumari Ramachandran�s story in the latest issue (1851) of Kalakaumudi is an example of a masterly story telling craft where the story unfolds as thoughts of the protagonist during a short journey.
